What to Do Immediately When a Pipe Bursts Before the Plumber Arrives

The Clock is Ticking: Stop the Water First

Step 1: Shut Off the Main Water Valve

You need to cut off the water supply to your entire house immediately. Do not waste time trying to tape the pipe or put a bucket under it.

• Where to find it: In Northern Virginia homes, the main shut-off valve is usually located in the basement, in a crawlspace, near the water heater, or outside near the street-level water meter.

• How to close it: If it is a lever-style valve, turn it so it is perpendicular (forming a "T" shape) to the pipe. If it is a round wheel valve, turn it clockwise (righty-tighty) until it stops completely.

Step 2: Turn Off the Electricity

Water and electricity are a deadly combination. If the burst pipe is leaking anywhere near electrical outlets, light fixtures, or your electrical panel, go straight to your breaker box. Turn off the breakers for the affected rooms before you step into any standing water.

Step 3: Open Your Faucets to Drain the System

Even after you shut off the main water valve, there is still pressurized water trapped inside your home's pipes. Go to the sinks and bathtubs and turn on the cold water taps. This relieves the pressure and allows the remaining water to safely drain down the sink instead of pouring out through the burst pipe.
